With over 2500 km to explore, the Wild Atlantic Way is a huge adventure waiting to be explored. It does however pose practical questions, such as where to start or where to visit along the route. A key question for customers were the essentials to have with you along the Wild Atlantic Way.
The question posed to 1495 people was, “Which of the following would you say are essential to have access to while travelling the Wild Atlantic Way!” Not surprisingly a map is an essential!
On one hand, the Wild Atlantic Road is so well signposted, that it is easy to follow the route without a map. On the other hand, those that did not find a map essential were probably using Sat Nav systems or had Internet Access and were using Google Maps or Apple Maps.
The results to this question show that GPS was the second most popular method of navigation, after maps. If you are planning to drive along the Gap of Dunloe, choosing a company with a high quality GPS system available for rent, or purchasing one yourself seems like sound advice.
Given that roaming rates have reduced significantly thanks to the European Union, Internet access was essential for 45% of people driving along the Wild Atlantic Way. In towns and cities, and most rural roads in Ireland, the mobile coverage is excellent. However, on some of the more remote areas along the Wild Atlantic Way, relying on 3g for navigation could lead to issues!
A guidebook was described as essential by 44% of people. There are some excellent guide books available, but “Exploring Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way: A Travel Guide to the West Coast of Ireland” by David Flanagan and Richard Creagh is an excellent publication.
In the opinion of the author, a plan of exactly what you want to visit before embarking along the Wild Atlantic Way is essential. After that, a GPS system will provide reliable navigation to the key points of interest you want to visit.
