Old Head is a superb little beach 20 minutes beyond Westport on the Louisburgh road. It's perfect for the family. Gorgeous golden sandy beaches, rock pools to explore and paddle in, a nearby ice-cream shop to keep the little ones entertained and of course spectacular views of the beautiful Croagh Patrick.
Ireland’s craft beer revolution continues to flourish, yet the last thing you expect to find in Westport is a Mayo Belgian-style beer brewed on the slopes of Croagh Patrick. The Mescan Brewery is everywhere in Westport, and mayo, you’ll find its short, stumpy bottles for sale in an increasing number of pubs like Campbell’s, McGing’s and Matt Molloy’s.
Croagh Patrick lords over Westport, climbing it is a rite of passage for the residence, but you would need to be a seasoned hiker to do so. When it comes to Campbell’s pub at the foot of the reek, however, fitness is irrelevant. Whether you stop in for a pint (those over 18 years of age), or a cup of tea or hot chocolate while browsing cabinets laid out like, it truly is a beautiful little burst of atmosphere.
This is a huge 42km cycling trail linking Westport and Achill along the route of an old railway route. This simple route includes: an off-road cycling and walking trail, a gourmet food trail spin-off, and fledgling greenways all over the country.
